Their Story...
Ben:
I’m so thankful to God for the life that He has given me. A lot of things had to happen for me to get to marry my beautiful soon-to-be wife, Kate. Stepping back and reminiscing about how God’s plan for my life has unfolded has me filled with gratitude for Him and everyone who has helped me get to this point.
Kate entering my life has been the greatest blessing. She has everything I’ve been looking for in a wife. Her joy and sense of humor brighten my day, her heart for God keeps me grounded, and she also happens to be the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen. - Ben
I was born and raised in Florida with my three sisters, Kailee, Ella, and Mia, by my parents, James and Sara. During my time there, my family attended various churches, looking for one that felt right. We tried a variety of denominations but ultimately, my mom wanted to find one that helped us grow closer to God. Meanwhile, my aunt, Jamie Field, was going through Weigh Down and eventually learned about Remnant Fellowship Church. We could all see the amazing changes in her life, so when she introduced us, we were eager to see the source of that change.
After being introduced to the church, we started webcasting every week. I’m very thankful to Gwen Shamblin Lara for starting this church and delivering sermons that focus on how to live a Godly life. The encouragement that we can truly reject sin and live righteously was exactly what I was looking for! Gwen's ability – and now Elizabeth Kaufmann's ability – to take Scripture and turn it into practical action points have really helped me continue to develop and strengthen my relationship with God.
We lived in another state, but my family made it a point to visit Tennessee for church festivals and major events. One by one, everyone in my family decided that Tennessee was where we wanted to be so we could be closer to the church. My sister Kailee moved here first, then the Field family, then me in 2019, and the rest of my family in 2020. Since moving here, I’ve loved being surrounded by so many like-minded and encouraging people. This has led to many amazing relationships, including meeting my soon-to-be wife, Kate Vick.
Kate entering my life has been the greatest blessing. She has everything I’ve been looking for in a wife. Her joy and sense of humor brighten my day, her heart for God keeps me grounded, and she also happens to be the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen. I’m so grateful for our families, our church, Ms. Elizabeth continuing Gwen’s Legacy, and everyone along the way who has been instrumental to our relationship with one another and our relationship with God as a couple. Getting to spend every day with Kate for the rest of my life is an absolute honor, and I cannot wait to marry her on June 13th.
Kate:
There is so much on my heart that I truly don’t even know where to begin. I want to thank God for everything He has done in my life and now, for the incredible gift of getting to marry Ben! I have grown up in this incredible church of Remnant Fellowship my entire life, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! Some of my earliest memories are here, learning about God and Jesus, watching the faithful and Godly marriages around me, and being surrounded by people who genuinely love God! I can’t even put into words how grateful I am!
Ben is such an amazing man. He has the most incredible heart for God. He wants to honor God in every decision and every conversation. He is so upright and steadfast. I have never met someone who loves God the way he does. He is always looking for my needs, often before I even realize them myself — and not just mine, but everyone’s! - Kate
Some of my sweetest memories as a child were growing up alongside the Hannah and Shamblin children. I also remember sitting and listening to Gwen talk about God and share her sermons. Being able to understand God, Christ, and the Bible at such a young age has definitely shaped who I am today! My family was also able to travel with Gwen and Joe Lara from time to time; witnessing the fruit of their lives firsthand showed me what a truly Godly marriage looks like. God was always at the center of their relationship, and seeing that example lived out so consistently really encouraged me to strive for a God-centered marriage.
I am also deeply thankful for my parents, Josh and Kimberly Vick. They found out about Remnant Fellowship in 2000 through mutual college friends and after visiting a few times, they joined the church! Being some of the early members of the church, they were also part of the very first Youth Group at Remnant, and they eventually got married in the church in 2003. My parents have always made our home God-focused, lively, and full of joy. I cannot think of a day growing up when I didn’t laugh or feel loved. They have always wanted the very best for me and have consistently looked for ways to help me grow closer to God. Their perseverance, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to God and to this church have shaped me more than I can express. Watching their marriage has shown me what it looks like to have a God focused but also fun marriage!
There are so many others who have guided us along our Spiritual lives. Elizabeth Kaufmann has given so much wisdom, time, and love to both of our families. I truly don’t know where I would be without her guidance and encouragement. The McDonalds, Walters, and Powers families have also been such an impactful part of my life. Being able to witness their Godly marriages and see the fruit of faithful obedience to God’s Word over the years has given me such a beautiful picture of what lasting, God-centered love looks like. Marriages that have endured, grown, and borne fruit have given me such confidence in what God can do and have shaped my expectations and hope for marriage! I truly would not be who I am without the teaching and fellowship at Remnant Fellowship. The accountability, encouragement, and love have prepared both Ben and me for this covenant.
From our very first date, I knew Benjamin Connor was the one. I remember thinking, “This is the man I’ve always dreamed of!” Ben is such an amazing man. He has the most incredible heart for God. He wants to honor God in every decision and every conversation. He is so upright and steadfast. I have never met someone who loves God the way he does. He is always looking for my needs, often before I even realize them myself — and not just mine, but everyone’s! One of the things I admire most about Ben is the way he keeps me accountable in such a gentle, loving, and patient way. He leads with humility and strength. He never fails to make me feel loved and appreciated. Ben reflects his love for God in the way he loves me! His love for everyone is so evident. It is truly convicting!
I truly cannot thank God enough for the blessing of getting to marry this man. Benjamin is the biggest blessing in my life. He is more than I ever could have asked for and more than I ever deserved. I still can’t believe I am getting married to this man. But I know none of this would even be possible without our relationship with God and without all the people who have shaped us and guided us, and for that, I am forever grateful.
